For sale is a mid-late 1970s FUNCO Bandito. The donor vehicle is a VW Beetle purchased new in 1965 from Spraker Volkswagen in Tulsa, OK. The Bandito was assembled in Tulsa by the late musician J. Martin "Moby" Anderson of the Par Three Trio, The Folkmen, William and The Tellers, The Black Mountain Boys, and No Large Trucks (among other bands). It's home has always been Tulsa and the odometer reads $7900 actual miles -- mostly accrued while being towed behind Moby's rig.
The original kit was fabricated by FUNCO's founder, Gil George, a partner at Hooker Header's in the 1960s. This buggy was assembled for street use and has remained unraced and unmolested while still retaining the dual rear shocks. The Bandito frame came from the FUNCO factory with the upgraded crossbar in the front and reinforced gussets in the back.
I had the privilege of speaking with Gil George who confirmed that the Bandito is authentic and also identified the side panels as produced by Skyjacker -- these panels are rare due to Skyjacker's infancy at the time this buggy was assembled. It also has a unique Porsche 356 "pre A" (1948-1955) front Duplex drum brake system that is in incredibly great shape -- very little were on the drums, all looks new. Extremely rare, these Porsche twin ribbed 13" aluminum drums and twin brake cylinders are on each front wheel. The transmission includes a durable anti-torque side plate mounted to the differential case. These quality components ensure this Bandito is built to last on stop on a dime.
The buggy includes Simpson 5 point racing harness and all guages, lights, and wipers are fully operable. It is currently equipped with a 1500cc single port engine but can utilize a larger engine if you desire. As evidenced by the Bandito's heritage and success at NORRA events, this vehicle could rocket across tough terrain but ours has been pampered. Truly an adult toy, this buggy will bring many smiles to her future owner.
