Description

Built in 1948, this is one of two stake bed trucks ordered by a steel mill in Florida. A complete frame off cosmetic restoration was completed about 7 years ago, but the mechanical components were left unrestored and are in good working condition. However, the electrical system was upgraded to 12 volt from the original 6 volt system and included new wiring front to back. A tilt open split windshield, butterfly hood and external tool box under the passenger door are examples of unique features of Diamond T trucks of this era.
The powertrain consists of an in-line flathead six-cylinder engine with a single barrel carburetor coupled to a 4 speed manual transmission. Combined with double overload leaf spring suspension and four wheel hydraulic drum brakes, this truck is can handle a load. A GVW rating of 8000 lbs. is stated on the body tag.
The exterior was painted a shade of yellow borrowed from a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. During the restoration, the grille and nearly every trim piece was either re-chromed or polished to bring back a brilliant luster. All the door and butterfly hood fitments are tight and open and close perfectly. The stake bed (7’9” x 7’1”) is all steel with oak slats. Notice the opening in the headboard on the passenger side, it was specifically ordered from the factory in order to carry long pieces of steel. The oak is slightly weathered and could stand to be refinished. Other than that, the exterior is in great shape.
Blue/purple fluorescent ground effect lighting was added at the top of the wheel openings and in the rear of the stake bed. The directional signal lights on the front were replaced in favor smaller ones mounted underneath the headlamp.
The interior restoration was completed at the same time and included: reupholstered seat, new head liner, carpet, kick panels, new glass and new weather stripping. The stainless trim around the windows was replaced as well as the hardware for both doors. The tilt open split windshield and it mechanisms are functional – this unique feature allows the windshield to tilt open slightly from the bottom and allows for extra ventilation in the cab. All the gauges in the dash are functional except the odometer.
If you are looking for a solid and reliable cruiser to add to your collection, this is it. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a piece of the Diamond T legacy.
