Description

History: My great uncle purchased this Land Rover new from a dealership in State College, PA. Uncle Jack was an obstetrician in Indiana, PA and needed a vehicle that could get him to the hospital in any weather, hence the Land Rover. This Rover was a foul-weather car for the family not a daily driver, although on nice summer days they sometimes removed the hard top, installed the soft top, and cruised the town. In 1988 the Rover failed to pass the state inspection and was subsequently left parked in his garage for many years. My uncle always intended to fix the frame, but life happened and he never got around to it. My brother purchased it from our uncle years later with plans to fix the frame and make it road-worthy once more. That also never happened, so I bought it from him it in January of 2014 as a winter project. Apparently in my family life happens to good intentions, but third time must be the charm as I actually completed the project.
My tenure with this Land Rover has been a blast. I removed the entire body and running gear, replaced the frame with a new galvanized frame from Rovers North, and started the rebuild. I have replaced brake shoes, slave cylinders, flexable lines, most hard lines, and the brake master cylinder. I replaced the clutch pressure plate and disk, slave cylinder, flexable hose, hard lines, and clutch master cylinder. I have all receipts of my work; it was lots and lots of money, just ask my wife. I took the doors and firewall to a body shop to have the bottom door frames replaced as the mild steel had rusted. The fire wall required a replacement of the door posts, toe boards, and side boards due to rust issues. All replacement parts are galvanized steel. I replaced the inside door panels with new ones; the seats are all original and are in great condition. I replaced all hoses and most of weather striping, although I did not replace the weather stripping on the roof. I replaced the shocks, fuel tank, fuel pump, and rebuilt the carburetor. I spent hours working on the electrical system; between the mice and all the cut-and-splicing done years ago, it was tough to sort out. All things electrical work today; it is a Lucas system so one never knows about tomorrow. I replaced all the fluids in everything. The tires are new as well. I have not touched the body with the exception of the door posts. The 45-year-old patina looks fantastic. It comes with the both original owner manuals, British and USA specs, repair and restoration manuals, the original jack, jack crank, engine hand crank, and the complete tool roll. It also comes with the original canvas soft top and complete set of bows for it. The top has one small rip in it; I have included it in a photo.
This Land Rover is now back on the road. It has a new PA inspection sticker after 26 years, and it's a hoot to drive! It shakes and shimmies and is loud inside. 1st and 2nd gears are not synchronized so shifting is an adventure until you learn how to double clutch. The steering is a bit loose, and in typical British form, the heater works well enough to keep the frost from the windshield. The patina is perfect. I could have painted it, but I could not destroy the 45-year-old patina - it looks like it should. It runs well. 60 mph is as fast as I have gone, any faster and I would start wondering about my back fillings. In recent inclement weather (-10 degrees with high winds) the Rover started right up when I tried. In other words, it does exactly what a Land Rover Series llA is supposed to do. I love it. This is perfect for the woods, ranch, any off-road adventure, or the end of the world as we know it (TETWAWKI).
This Land Rover is sold where-is, as-is. There is no warrantee implied. I encourage you to make arrangements to view and drive prior to sale. I will assist in the loading only.
I will only accept cash or a bank certified check, not PayPal. I will not sell to anyone who has a negative rating or who has just joined eBay.
